So, after about five years using exclusively Linux, I’ve switched over to a Mac. I’ve had my Macbook Pro for a week now and my conclusion thus far is “wow”.
The main thing that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by is the incredible difference in polish between the open-source stuff I’ve been using and the for-pay software for the Mac. There is just such a huge gulf in terms of user experience ‘twixt, say, anything by the Omni Group and basically damn near everything you could run on Linux. Their stuff is so good I actually bought software from them, which was kind of a weird experience for me: Not only was I paying money instead of using something the authors just give away, I was paying money for something that I had pirated versions of sitting right in front of me.
This was probably the first time I’ve had the feeling that these people so deserved my money that I’d feel like a criminal if I didn’t pay for it. Weird!
There has been a bit of adjustment in my workflow, learning what the “best practices”, if you will, are for doing things in OS X, but I’m finding it to be a transition both pleasant and fairly simple.
Also, I can do literally anything I did in Linux on my Mac! Seriously, I should have switched ages ago…
